The Peruvian government announced on March 23 the appointment of Waldir Eloy Ayasta Mechán as the new Minister of Energy and Mines. Ayasta, a mechanical electrical engineer, is expected to focus on promoting new investments in the mining and energy sector and continue efforts to close gaps in access to energy.

Ayasta graduated from the Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo in Lambayeque. In 2025, he served as Vice Minister of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mines. Before that, he led the General Directorate of Rural Electrification between 2024 and 2025.

In recent months, Ayasta also headed the Information Technology Office at the National Infrastructure Authority (ANIN) and since January has managed planning and investment projects at Electronortemedio, a regional public electricity service company. He began his professional career at Electronorte before joining Distriluz Group, where he held strategic leadership roles.

Ayasta was also Director of Technological Innovation Projects (PITEC), where he organized, directed, coordinated, and controlled technical management with several companies including Electronoroeste, Electronorte, Hidrandina, and Electrocentro. In academia, he holds a specialization in Senior Business Management from Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico and earned a doctorate in Business Administration from Universidad Nacional del Callao’s Graduate School.

He also has project management certification from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) and teaches at Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI). The government said his experience will be important for advancing key projects within Peru’s energy sector.
