A group of volunteers participated in a cleanup event near the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex, according to an announcement on March 28. The activity took place along the Vía de Evitamiento, aiming to help preserve this significant cultural heritage site.

The cleanup was conducted on March 26 and 27 between the districts of Huanchaco and Víctor Larco. Volunteers focused their efforts on areas affected by solid waste and debris accumulation.

Support for the initiative came from the Subgerencia de Ambiente of the Municipalidad Distrital de Huanchaco, as well as more than 20 local citizens, including university students, schoolchildren, and professionals. Two front loaders and two dump trucks were also used during the operation.

Christian Arbaiza Mendoza, director of the Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura (DDC) of La Libertad, said he appreciated “the commitment of the volunteers” and called on citizens and institutions to participate in similar initiatives aimed at protecting cultural heritage. Arbaiza Mendoza also said that these actions are intended “to preserve the exceptional values that allowed Chan Chan to be recognized as a World Heritage Site,” promoting its sustainable care.

The work is being supervised by resident archaeologist Juan Vilela. Organizers hope these efforts will lead to significant progress in restoring this sector.
