The United States ambassador to Peru, Bernie Navarro, visited the Cerro Verde mining operations in Arequipa and presented the company with the “Bicentennial United States – Peru Award: For Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility” on March 30. The award acknowledges Cerro Verde’s significant contribution to the country’s economic and social development.
Navarro said that Cerro Verde, which is majority owned by US-based Freeport-McMoRan with a 55.08% stake, operates according to high international standards within the mining industry. He highlighted the company’s responsible management practices and its commitment to environmental protection and social engagement.
During his visit, Navarro also praised the technical skills of Cerro Verde’s workforce. “I am proud of the human team at this mining company, whose high technical capacity allows them to continue contributing steadily to the progress of Arequipa and the country,” Navarro said. He also recognized Cerro Verde’s efforts in assisting communities affected by recent rainfall in Arequipa.
The ambassador toured several key areas of the mining operation during his visit. These included La Enlozada wastewater treatment plant (PTAR), as well as open pits at Cerro Verde and Santa Rosa, SXEW plant, and Concentrator 1.
The recognition reflects ongoing collaboration between Peruvian institutions and international partners such as Freeport-McMoRan.
