The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) inaugurated a new pavilion for the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences on March 26. The modern facility is designed to strengthen academic training, research, and creative work in the humanities as part of the university’s 475th anniversary.

The ceremony was led by Rector Dr. Jeri Gloria Ramón Ruffner de Vega and attended by Vice Rector for Undergraduate Studies Dr. Carlos Francisco Cabrera Carranza, Vice Rector for Research and Graduate Studies Dr. José Segundo Niño Montero, General Secretary Dr. Elsa Ascención Marchinares Maekawa, Dean of the Faculty Dr. Marcel Martín Velázquez Castro, along with other authorities, faculty members, students, and administrative staff.

Dean Marcel Velázquez said that this new space represents significant progress for the academic community by integrating learning and research services that will complement undergraduate and graduate education. He also emphasized “the role of humanities, arts, and critical thinking in building citizenship and strengthening public education.”

Rector Jeri Ramón Ruffner said “this project responds to an institutional vision aimed at providing the university with modern infrastructure worthy of its legacy.” She added that “the pavilion is projected as an architectural landmark visible from one of the main avenues,” consolidating a contemporary image linked to culture, art, and free expression.

Ramón Ruffner also highlighted “the joint work across several administrations that made this long-awaited project possible” as well as UNMSM’s commitment to continuous improvement in academic spaces.

The new building features four floors above ground plus two basements dedicated to academic services and research areas intended to support interdisciplinary training and innovative proposals within the Faculty.

With this development, UNMSM reinforces its commitment to quality public education focused on critical thinking, intellectual creation, and comprehensive student development.
