The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) held a national seminar titled “Día de la Tierra: Conocer el territorio para un Perú sostenible” on April 22, bringing together specialists, academics, and authorities to discuss strengthening Peru’s resilience to environmental challenges and climate change. The event was organized by the university’s Office of Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation.
The seminar addressed the importance of responsible action in ensuring planetary sustainability. During the opening session, Dr. Carlos Francisco Cabrera Carranza said that research and teaching are essential for understanding natural phenomena. Dr. José Segundo Niño Montero said that training committed professionals is fundamental for building a secure and resilient future.
Presentations covered topics such as plant ecology on Peru’s coast by Dr. Héctor Aponte Ubillús; use of national natural heritage inventories as strategic tools by Mg. Cristina Trujillo from the Ministry of Environment; opportunities for sustainable development discussed by Geographer David Ortiz Jaramillo from PCM and Engineer Oscar Lazo Calle from MINAM; urban sustainability challenges outlined by Architect Gina Gabriela Chambi Echegaray; and technological innovations like “Geoquebradas” presented by Mg. Henry A. Jesus Matos.

At the close of the event, Chambi Echegaray thanked participants saying that knowing our territory is key to protecting it.
