The Faculty of Biological Sciences at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) welcomed its incoming class for the 2026 academic year during a ceremony held on April 1. The event took place in the auditorium of the Research Pavilion and was attended by faculty authorities, including Dean Martha Valdivia Cuya, as well as professors and members of the university community.
Valdivia Cuya said that joining this faculty means becoming part of an academic tradition where scientific training is closely linked to social commitment, professional ethics, and research. “In this Faculty you will learn that biological sciences not only explain life but also offer concrete answers to environmental, health, productive, and social problems faced by our country and the world. Each course, practice, and formative experience will be key in your development as responsible and committed professionals,” she said.
She also told students that they are beginning a stage that will require responsibility, organization, and dedication but will also be full of meaningful learning experiences. “Take advantage of this opportunity; participate actively; do research; and start building now the professional you aspire to be,” Valdivia Cuya added.
Other faculty leaders present included Guillermo Álvarez Béjar (Coordinator of General Studies), Zeze Bravo Gutiérrez (Director of Professional School of Biological Sciences), Mónica Paredes Anaya (Director of Professional School of Genetics and Biotechnology), Pedro Castellanos Sánchez (Director of Professional School of Microbiology and Parasitology), and Ruth García de la Guarda (Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies). They all said that entering this program marks an important step in both professional formation and personal growth.
During the ceremony, students who won at the International SynBio Camp Hackathon were recognized for their achievement at a global competition. The top three performers from the admission process were awarded scholarships to study English at UNMSM’s Language Center as recognition for their academic excellence.
Valdivia Cuya concluded by emphasizing: “May these years not only allow you to learn science but also understand life so you can transform it with knowledge and responsibility.”
