The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) began the external evaluation process for the accreditation of its Civil Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Software Engineering programs on April 21. The assessment is being conducted by an external evaluator through the National System for Evaluation, Accreditation and Certification of Educational Quality (SINEACE).
This initiative aims to ensure that these professional schools meet national quality standards. The programs are part of the Faculty of Geological, Mining, Metallurgical, Geographic, Civil, Environmental Engineering, Architecture and Urbanism (FIGMMG), and the Faculty of Systems Engineering and Informatics (FISI).
Rector Jeri Ramón Ruffner led the opening ceremony alongside university officials. During her remarks she said: “We seek that at the end of our administration all 20 faculties and all 68 traditional professional schools have accreditation.” She also emphasized that educational quality requires joint efforts from teachers, students, and staff toward continuous improvement.
Julio César Sandoval Incháustegui, head of UNMSM’s Central Office for Academic Quality and Accreditation, said this three-day external evaluation will show if these schools are ready to reach quality standards. He highlighted a commitment to positioning San Marcos among Peru’s top universities.
Luis Jaime Collantes Santisteban from the evaluating entity explained that after signing the formal act on April 21, evaluators would conduct interviews, review documents and visit facilities until April 23 under strict confidentiality guidelines promoted by SINEACE. “The members of the evaluation committee will act with absolute respect for confidentiality and ethics promoted by SINEACE,” he said.
Ruffner expressed confidence in a transparent process contributing significantly to academic strengthening. She noted: “I am convinced this process will give us many important things… Accreditation strengthens opportunities for international academic mobility,” mentioning exchanges in countries such as Spain and China.
According to the official website the university promotes cultural well-being through initiatives supporting responsibility and sustainable development. UNMSM utilizes multiple campuses including central facilities as well as provincial extensions according to its website. It leads public universities in rankings from QS, Scimago and Webometrics according to its website.
The university operates autonomously as recognized by Peru’s constitution according to its official site, offering over eighty undergraduate programs along with postgraduate options according to its website. It is focused on advancing knowledge dissemination while supporting national sustainable development as stated on its site.
Looking ahead, UNMSM officials say they aim for full program accreditation across all faculties—a move expected not only to strengthen institutional reputation but also enhance student opportunities both nationally and internationally.
