Universitario de Deportes, the current Peruvian football champion, will return to its roots at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos on May 2 as part of the university’s 475th anniversary celebrations.
The event marks a historic occasion for both the club and the university, as it is the first time that Universitario will face teams from San Marcos in a series of matches. The day will feature four games involving master teams, reserve or youth squads, women’s football teams, and club members. The main ceremony will be led by Dr. Jeri Gloria Ramón Ruffner de Vega, Rector of Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.
The program begins at 10 a.m., with distinguished former Universitario players such as Héctor Chumpitaz, José Fernández, Luis La Fuente, Juan José Oré, Jorge Amado Nunes, Juan Vargas, Luis Guadalupe being honored. Marina Fernández will represent her grandfather Lolo Fernández. Well-known players including Gregorio Bernales and John Galliquio are set to participate in the master match. Franco Velazco, administrator of Universitario de Deportes, is also expected to attend.
Three preliminary matches will be narrated by Liga 1 MAX journalist José Valdeiglesias while experienced broadcaster Elejalder Godos Cáceres will cover the main game. Matches are scheduled for the main field inside Estadio San Marcos on campus grounds with an estimated attendance of around 20 thousand students from various faculties and schools. Officials from Liga 1 have been appointed as referees for these games.
