The United States ambassador to Peru, Bernie Navarro, met with Julio del Valle Ballón, president of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), on April 10 to discuss ways to strengthen long-term research collaboration between the two institutions.
The meeting highlighted the importance of international partnerships in advancing education and research. Both parties emphasized a shared commitment to addressing societal challenges through academic cooperation.
Del Valle said, “We are very committed to the training of young people and the development of the country; therefore, we have an active role in providing proposals to society. We have the capacity to train, research and develop technology in areas that are essential for contributing to the future of the country, such as aerospace—considering the future spaceport ‘El Pato’ in Talara—as well as sustainable mining.”
Navarro responded by emphasizing his dedication to educational ties between Peru and the United States. “My job is to further strengthen more than 200 years of relations between the United States and Peru. In that sense, it is very important to promote educational links between both countries,” Navarro said. He added: “I am a man of action; we are going far.”
Discussions focused on creating joint projects in engineering, technology, and space sciences. One initiative aims at forming a consortium involving U.S. and Peruvian universities alongside companies for developing space technology from Peru. Another project proposes establishing a technology center bringing together higher education institutions from both countries with participation from private sector partners.
The delegation visited PUCP’s Institute of Radio Astronomy (Inras) facilities where ongoing projects were presented.
