The Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) Tumbes, together with the José Alfredo Mendoza Olavarría Regional Hospital (JAMO) II-2, announced on March 28 the strengthening of preventive actions against dengue and leptospirosis. The measures include training for healthcare staff and larval control activities in homes across four local health posts.
These initiatives aim to protect public health by improving early diagnosis and treatment of leptospirosis. More than fifty medical professionals, nurses, and technicians participated in a capacity-building session focused on using the “Flowchart for Diagnosis and Clinical Management of Persons Affected by Leptospirosis,” which has been approved by the Ministry of Health. The training also covered topics such as regional epidemiological trends, laboratory diagnostics, and outbreak prevention measures.
In addition to training, Diresa is conducting home inspections through its Environmental Health Executive Directorate at Caleta Grau, Zorritos, Vaquería, and Oidor health posts. Inspectors apply larvicide to water storage containers during these visits—a method approved by the World Health Organization.
Health authorities called on residents to cooperate with field personnel during these interventions. These efforts are part of the “2026 Dengue Prevention and Control Plan” launched by the Ministry of Health.
