The Ministry of Production, through the National Fisheries Development Fund (FONDEPES), concluded a technical training course titled “Maintenance of Outboard Motors” for 25 artisanal fishers from Lake Titicaca in Llachón, Capachica district. The closing ceremony took place on March 28 and was led by Jesús Barrientos Ruiz, Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, along with Katia Natali Novoa Sánchez, head of FONDEPES.

This initiative aims to address technical gaps in artisanal fishing by promoting preventive maintenance of outboard motors. Such maintenance is considered essential for operational safety and efficiency during fishing activities on Lake Titicaca.

Participants received both theoretical and practical instruction over 40 hours. They learned about engine function, fault diagnosis, maintenance procedures, and operation techniques. This knowledge is expected to help reduce repair costs, prevent equipment failures during fishing trips, and extend the lifespan of their engines.

“The strengthening of our fishers’ technical skills not only improves their productivity but also protects their lives. We are committed to safer, more efficient, and sustainable artisanal fishing by bringing training directly to communities where it is most needed,” said Barrientos Ruiz.

FONDEPES plans further support in Puno for 2026 with projections including 228 technical assistance sessions and training for 105 aquaculture producers. The fund will also continue facilitating access to productive financing; so far this year over S/377 thousand has been approved in credits.

One participant said: “Before we had constant problems with the engines and spent a lot on repairs. Now we know how to prevent failures and work more safely. This training helps us directly improve our income.”
