The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) announced on March 28 the signing of key agreements that will enable its new campus in the district of Chilca, province of Cañete, to become operational. The agreements were formalized under the leadership of Rector Dr. Jeri Ramón Ruffner and aim to ensure both technical and budgetary support for the project.
The move is significant as it marks a step forward in UNMSM’s decentralization strategy, which seeks to expand access to higher education outside Lima. The event was attended by Félix Choquehuanca, mayor of Chilca district, and Deborah Inga, councilor from the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima. Both officials participated in the signing ceremony and highlighted institutional collaboration between local governments and UNMSM.
A central part of the meeting was the signing of an Operation and Maintenance Commitment Act (Tomo 22). This agreement ensures that UNMSM’s General Planning Office will allocate annual resources necessary for running the new campus. The university said this planning secures funding for essential services, staffing, and preventive maintenance.
According to UNMSM officials, these steps are intended to guarantee high-quality facilities for students in Chilca while maintaining operational sustainability over time. By establishing a local branch in Cañete province, UNMSM aims to reduce barriers faced by students seeking higher education within their own region.
The initiative allows young people from Cañete and nearby areas to pursue professional training without needing to travel long distances or relocate. University leaders say this expansion strengthens San Marcos’ presence as a leading institution committed to decentralized professional education.
