The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos received a donation of 66 specialized books related to Chinese culture from COSCO SHIPPING GROUP, according to a March 17 announcement. The donation aims to strengthen and promote cultural exchange between Peru and China.
The handover took place during a meeting between representatives of the shipping company, led by director Jin Hongrong, and the university’s rector, Dr. Jeri Ramón Ruffner. During the event, Ramón Ruffner thanked COSCO SHIPPING GROUP for the gesture and said it is important to strengthen collaboration between academia and business in order to improve educational quality and expand academic resources for students.
“We consider that COSCO SHIPPING Group is an ally in Peru. In the year we commemorate the 475th anniversary of San Marcos’ founding, we reaffirm that our university is not only a beacon of culture and research but also a reference point in social responsibility and employability. For Peru and all of America, San Marcos remains at the forefront as an institution guiding educational policies,” Ramón Ruffner said.
She also highlighted that the university is experiencing a new phase of academic development. “Today we are in a growth phase, with 16 new professional careers created with a vision for the future, including water engineering, maritime engineering, port engineering among others, which have been well received in the latest admissions process,” she said.
Ramón Ruffner explained that some of these new programs are supported by cooperation with universities from China and other countries, which will help strengthen international training for students. She added that “any member of San Marcos will be able to access these books, which will allow them to learn about Chinese culture.” She also announced that at the end of March a delegation from San Marcos will travel to China at the invitation of an academic institution there: “Our goal is for our students to receive training in that country and later share their knowledge with their peers,” she concluded.
COSCO SHIPPING GROUP director Jin Hongrong said he hopes to continue strengthening collaboration with San Marcos University. He described it as an important cultural and academic reference point in Peru. Hongrong also noted that the university has been adapting to technological advances in line with his company’s vision for development. He expressed hope for further cooperation on university-business exchanges and joint talent training in maritime sectors.
Representatives from COSCO SHIPPING Group’s human resources area, COSCO SHIPPING South America, as well as deans from various faculties at San Marcos University were also present at the meeting.
