The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos presented its university welfare model on March 20 during the second edition of the Higher Education Quality Week, organized by the Institute for Quality Assurance (IAC-CINDA). The event took place in the main auditorium of the Faculty of Systems Engineering and Informatics, with participation from 60 representatives of higher education institutions across Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as officials and technical staff from the Office of University Welfare Services.

Mario Martínez Huapaya, head of the General Office of University Welfare (OGBU), said that San Marcos was chosen as a site for an academic observation visit during this edition. He explained, “These visits are carried out in several Peruvian universities, within the framework of this event that brings together teachers from Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, among other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The objective is to learn how programs and activities aimed at student welfare are developed, covering aspects such as mental health and nutrition.”

Martínez Huapaya also said that hosting this international event positions San Marcos as a regional reference in student welfare, strengthens its international profile, and allows it to showcase good institutional practices related to educational quality. “At San Marcos we understand that educational quality is not only measured academically but also by our ability to guarantee our students’ comprehensive well-being. That is why we promote various services aimed at their personal, academic and professional development,” Martínez Huapaya said.

The presentation by OGBU included information about services such as university dining and housing, psychological care, job placement support, health services and sports. The activity brought together representatives from various higher education institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean to exchange experiences and best practices focused on student welfare management.

This year’s Higher Education Quality Week focused on comprehensive student welfare through academic activities, practical sessions and observation visits at four leading Peruvian universities.
