The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) began its 2026 academic year during a ceremony held at the San Marcos Cultural Center, bringing together university authorities, education sector representatives, and the academic community on April 1.
The event was led by Dr. Jeri Gloria Ramón Ruffner de Vega, rector of UNMSM. The main table included Dr. Carlos Cabrera Carranza, vice-rector for undergraduate academics; Dr. Juan Mariano Navarro Pando, vice-minister of Pedagogical Management from the Ministry of Education; and Dr. Yolanda Bertha Erazo Flores, vice-minister of Labor.
During the ceremony, Vice-Minister Navarro Pando delivered a keynote lecture addressing key challenges in higher education and emphasized the importance of strengthening academic training that aligns with national needs.
A special segment recognized faculty members who achieved promotions in their academic careers due to their professional track record, dedication, and contributions to educational excellence. This recognition highlighted the fundamental role teachers play in training professionals and generating knowledge.
The start of the new academic year was also described as an opportunity to renew commitments to comprehensive education, research, and critical thinking within the context of UNMSM’s 475 years of history as “Decana de América” (Dean of America).
With this event, UNMSM marks the beginning of its 2026 school year by reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence and recognizing teaching merit in support of national development.
