The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) awarded posthumous Doctor Honoris Causa degrees to Alberto Andrade Carmona, Víctor Andrés Belaúnde Diez Canseco, and Edmundo César Lévano La Rosa in a ceremony held on March 24. The event took place at the Loreto Chapel of the San Marcos Cultural Center and was led by Rector Dr. Jeri Gloria Ramón Ruffner de Vega, along with other university officials.
The ceremony aimed to honor the intellectual legacy of these three individuals. According to the university, it was more than a formal event and served as an act of institutional memory and recognition for their contributions to Peru.
During the ceremony, family members and academics highlighted each honoree’s achievements. Rocío Andrade Botteri spoke about her father Alberto Andrade Carmona’s dedication to public service. Dr. Martín Belaúnde Moreyra described his father Víctor Andrés Belaúnde Diez Canseco’s work as an intellectual, diplomat, and reference point for Peruvian thought. Writer and academic Dr. Marco Martos Carrera recognized Edmundo César Lévano La Rosa as one of Peru’s most influential journalists who strongly defended democratic values.
The university said that honoring these figures is also a way to reflect on their relevance today: Andrade symbolizes citizen-focused governance; Belaúnde represents humanist thought and international engagement; while Lévano stands out for critical journalism committed to society.
Medals, diplomas, and institutional insignias were presented to relatives of the honorees during the event. The university said this gesture integrates them symbolically into San Marcos’ living history while recognizing examples that continue influencing current national challenges.
