Four members of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos athletics team secured third place at the 2026 National University Athletics Championship, organized by the Peruvian University Sports Federation, and qualified for the IV FISU America Games Lima 2026, according to an April 20 announcement.
This achievement is significant as it allows these athletes to represent their university and country in a major international competition. The event is set to take place from July 21 to August 1 at the Videna Sports Complex.
The championship was held from April 17 to April 19 at Videna’s athletic stadium, bringing together around 460 athletes from nearly thirty universities nationwide. Fredy Mogollón Otiniano, Katerine Tantalean Fernández, Sofía Camasca Pillaca, and Akira Cortez Noborikawa earned their spots in the upcoming games after strong performances. Mogollón said that participating and qualifying for the Pan American University Games “is a privilege,” adding his satisfaction with achieving one of his main goals through hard work in training. Tantalean Fernández and Camasca Pillaca both said this qualification marks an important step in their sports careers and makes them proud as San Marcos representatives. Cortez Noborikawa highlighted that during his two years on the San Marcos team, this event allowed him to showcase his abilities with notable results: second place in the 800 meters, third in the 400 meters, and second place in the relay.
The athletes collectively thanked university authorities for ongoing support from offices such as Rectorado, General Administration Directorate (DGA), General Office of University Welfare (OGBU), and University Sports Center.
