Rector Jeri Ramón Ruffner of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos inaugurated the Academic Year 2026 during a ceremony held on March 30, urging new students to approach their education with responsibility and commitment.
The event marked the official start of classes for incoming students at one of the country’s oldest universities. The ceremony highlighted both the significance of this new phase in students’ lives and its broader importance for higher education in Peru.
“This is the new generation of sanmarquinos called to transform the country; for this reason, they are urged to develop their training with responsibility, rigor, and academic commitment,” said Rector Ramón Ruffner. She acknowledged that many challenges remain in Peru, referencing ongoing political, social, and moral crises as well as corruption. “You are eager to learn and are asked to make the most of your studies. The situation facing our country is not unknown,” she said.
Ramón Ruffner also congratulated students on reaching an important milestone by gaining admission: “You have fulfilled a dream—your own and your families’. Now it is up to you to take on this new university stage with responsibility, a space for knowledge production and comprehensive training where you will consolidate your abilities and life projects.” She declared that incorporating a new generation strengthens San Marcos’ educational mission. In its 475th year, she reaffirmed her commitment “to train professionals with strong values and a deep sense of social responsibility.”
Vice-Rector Carlos Cabrera Carranza described the inauguration as significant for all members of San Marcos: “This day is very important for all sanmarquinos because it marks the beginning of Academic Year 2026 at la Decana de América, which throughout its 475 years has been a benchmark in thought, knowledge, and commitment to the country.” He emphasized perseverance among entrants: “San Marcos is not just a university; it’s where knowledge is built, critical citizens are formed, and values are cultivated. Here you will find not only academic training but also opportunities to discover your interests.”
The event took place at Ella Dunbar Auditorium with attendance from dozens of freshmen along with university authorities including Vice-Rector José Niño Montero as well as deans, vice-deans, school directors, and faculty members from various departments. As part of proceedings, psychology professor Susana Roggero Rebaza delivered a talk titled “San Marcos 360°: Survival Guide for University Success,” outlining key goals for sustaining academic progress.
The ceremony featured performances by San Marcos Choir singing national anthems followed by artistic presentations by Elenco Mayor de Danzas.
