Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) recognized the commitment and contributions of students involved in university social responsibility (RSU) volunteer initiatives during the past year, according to a March 31 statement. The recognition took place at the RSU Volunteer Recognition Ceremony 2025, organized by the Academic Directorate of Social Responsibility (DARS).
The event highlighted the importance of student participation in university volunteering and its role in building an active citizenship focused on social and environmental sustainability both nationally and within the PUCP community.
Julio del Valle, rector of PUCP, attended the ceremony and spoke about the value of volunteering among students. “The RSU Volunteering contributes to forming a critical, participative citizenship committed to democratic life, which is what we must defend. Our democracy is fragile; it requires much commitment, faith, and hope,” said Del Valle.
Nani Pease, director of DARS, explained that volunteering with an RSU focus is seen as a comprehensive formative experience that challenges individuals not only as future professionals but also as citizens committed to their communities. Pease said these initiatives go beyond isolated actions by addressing complex contexts marked by persistent gaps that require responsible responses. She also mentioned ongoing work on a policy recognizing volunteer credits at PUCP. “The most fruitful experience when volunteering is when its core lies in formative learning; this is what RSU Volunteering proposes from PUCP,” said Pease.
Angie Kina, an honored student from the Faculty of Social Sciences and recognized RSU volunteer, shared her experience: “With Cultural Volunteering I developed artistic and cultural mediation skills from an interculturality, gender and inclusion perspective. It was gratifying to get involved with reality and generate positive social impact.”
During the ceremony, volunteers received hand-crafted hummingbird-shaped pieces made by Antonio Oré from Jampaq Perú as symbols of resilience and hope. These recognitions acknowledged both individual effort and collective progress achieved through sustained engagement with RSU volunteering programs.
PUCP reaffirmed its commitment to comprehensive student development through promoting a culture of socially responsible volunteering aimed at sustainable transformation.
