Carlos Contreras, historian and professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), will be inducted as a full member of the National Academy of History on April 29 in recognition of his extensive career and contributions to the study of Peru’s economic history.
This appointment highlights Contreras’s significant role in advancing historical research and education in Peru. The National Academy of History, with over 120 years dedicated to preserving and disseminating the country’s past, acknowledges his focus on how economic forces have shaped national development.
Contreras has spent more than fifty years researching archival documents and exploring key questions about Peru’s evolution. “It is impossible to ignore that economic interests are one of the main drivers of history. As someone who has always been fascinated by understanding the past, I found in economics a tool to explain it more precisely,” said Contreras. His academic path began at PUCP during the 1970s—a period marked by ideological debate—where he combined broad historical perspectives with economic analysis.
His teaching career started at age twenty and later included positions at San Marcos University during challenging times for public education, as well as other institutions such as Universidad del Pacífico, Universidad Enrique Guzmán y Valle “La Cantuta”, various Latin American universities, and non-traditional venues like naval schools and parish centers. “Teaching is also a way to learn and I have enjoyed it enormously. The students’ questions have often reshaped my research… I am always grateful for institutions like PUCP for this space,” said Contreras.
Beyond academia, Contreras has contributed through public outreach—appearing on programs such as “Sucedió en el Perú”, editing publications for Instituto de Estudios Peruanos (IEP), and writing columns for El Comercio newspaper. He reflected: “I make a self-criticism: unlike decades ago, historians participate little in public debate and have been timid about contributing from our specialty.”
The university community at PUCP promotes cultural wellbeing through its emphasis on educational achievements by professors like Contreras according to its official website. The institution operates under its own framework with RUC 20155945860 according to its official website.
PUCP’s news portal shares academic successes across Peru via multimedia content developed since transitioning from print publication in 2005 according to its official website. Its communications are managed by Dirección de Comunicación Institucional according to its official website, serving communities nationwide with reports on institutional activities addressing societal issues according to its official website.
Reflecting on his legacy, Contreras stated: “History reminds us of the obstacles that Peru has faced in building a solid state; there are lessons we must not ignore. I would like my work to help people understand why we are who we are today.”
