The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) announced on March 26 a comprehensive initiative to modernize the Mercado Modelo in the district of Chupaca, combining infrastructure investment with training for local merchants. The project, delivered through the National Program for Productive Diversification, includes more than S/ 32.5 million in funding and marks a significant step toward improving local commerce.
This initiative aims to upgrade the market’s facilities, which will benefit over 16,000 residents by providing 300 sales stalls—both permanent and temporary—as well as additional services such as cold storage rooms, a food court, nursing room, security measures, parking spaces, and an improved solid waste management system. With the technical dossier now ready for execution, authorities say this phase will help organize commercial activities and boost the local economy.
Alongside these improvements, PRODUCE implemented its “Fortalece tu Mercado” strategy via the National Program Tu Empresa. As part of this effort, 100 merchants from Chupaca received training in business formalization, management skills, sales growth strategies, digital tools usage, and proper product handling.
During a visit to the market site led by Deputy Minister of Micro and Small Enterprises (MYPE) and Industry Juan Carlos Requejo Alemán—accompanied by Chupaca Mayor Luis Bastidas Vásquez; Marybel Vidal Matos from the National Program for Productive Diversification; and Christian Flores Magino from Tu Empresa—the impact of these actions was highlighted. “Today not only are we delivering a technical dossier; we are taking concrete steps to transform this market into a true engine of development for Chupaca. This is coordinated work with local government that will allow us to create modern infrastructure worthy of our merchants’ efforts. We want this market to become a hub for local and regional development where more families can grow their income and access new opportunities,” said Requejo Alemán.
Officials toured existing facilities during their visit to assess current conditions firsthand while engaging with vendors who continue receiving support under PRODUCE’s ongoing programs.
With these measures in place, PRODUCE says it remains committed to supporting modernization efforts at markets nationwide while enhancing merchant capabilities—aiming ultimately at greater productivity, formalization initiatives across regions,
and broader economic development.
