The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) announced on March 21 that more than three tons of solid waste were removed from the seabed at the El Faro Artisanal Fishing Dock in Islay–Matarani, Arequipa region. The cleanup was part of the “Mi Mar, Mi Hogar” campaign.
This effort is significant as it helps restore environmental conditions at the dock and protects marine resources vital to local artisanal fishing. A total of 3,008 kilograms of debris were collected, with about 90 percent consisting of tires and the remainder made up of bottles, metal scraps, sacks, and other refuse.
Seventy-one people participated in the event, including artisanal fishers, divers and their assistants, dock staff, and representatives from various public institutions. Five artisanal boats and a barge supported the removal of accumulated waste from the seabed.
Jesús Barrientos, Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, said: “The sea is a source of work, food and development for thousands of families along the coast. That is why its care is a shared responsibility. When the State, artisanal fishers and local authorities work together in an articulated way, we not only recover our marine ecosystems but also ensure that hydrobiological resources continue to generate opportunities, employment and food security for the country.”
The event was organized with support from PRODUCE’s Directorate General for Artisanal Fisheries; Islay District Municipality; Islay Provincial Municipality; Mollendo Port Authority (DICAPI); Arequipa Regional Government; Regional Health Management; Matarani Health Center; National Police; IMARPE; SANIPES; FONDEPES; as well as local unions such as the Islay–Matarani Artisanal Fishers’ Union and ACECHIN.
According to PRODUCE’s statement, this intervention is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen sustainable artisanal fishing practices and promote ocean stewardship among coastal communities. These actions align with conservation goals set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
