The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) marked its 109th anniversary on March 23, highlighting a history defined by continuous change and adaptation. Founded in March 1917 as the first private higher education institution in Peru, PUCP began with just two classrooms at La Recoleta school in Plaza Francia, where nine students attended the inaugural class on aesthetics.
Since its founding, PUCP has undergone various phases of transformation that have shaped its identity and educational model. The university says this ongoing evolution has allowed it to remain relevant and impactful within Peruvian society for over a century. From an initial enrollment of only twenty students in the Faculty of Letters, PUCP expanded during its early years by adding faculties such as Jurisprudence.
A significant milestone came in 1942 when the Holy See granted PUCP the title “Pontificia,” strengthening its Catholic identity and extending its influence beyond local boundaries. The university’s physical transformation accelerated after acquiring land from José de la Riva Agüero’s estate, which became the main campus. By the late 1950s, academic units moved to this new site, marking a period of urban and academic change.
Modernization efforts continued under rector Felipe Mac Gregor beginning in 1963. His tenure saw both educational reforms and spatial reorganization through a master plan for campus development. In 1970, PUCP introduced an innovative general studies program focused on comprehensive education before specialization—a feature that remains central to its curriculum today.
In recent decades, PUCP has emphasized research, innovation, and social responsibility while adapting to global changes. The university is now recognized among leading academic institutions nationally and regionally due to sustained improvements in teaching quality and societal impact reflected in international rankings.
As it celebrates more than a century since its foundation, PUCP highlights that adaptability is key to maintaining relevance amid constant change: “More than a characteristic,” says the institution’s statement about transformation over time; “this is our way of remaining current.” The university affirms that it continues evolving while staying true to essential values—educating people, generating knowledge, and contributing to national development.
