The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú held the Taller de Autoridades 2026 on April 28 and 29, bringing together more than 140 participants including university authorities, faculty, students, and administrative representatives. The event focused on the role and wellbeing of professors as a fundamental pillar of academic excellence at the university.
The workshop is significant as it reflects ongoing efforts by the university to promote dialogue and collective decision-making in addressing educational challenges. This approach aims to strengthen both teaching quality and institutional development within the broader context of societal transformation.
During the opening session, Rector Dr. Julio del Valle said: “The community PUCP is the center of our dedication and decisions. If we want to contribute to the wellbeing, growth and excellence of the University, we must have a willingness to listen and a spirit of dialogue to identify challenges, and collectively define proposals that we put into practice.” He also stated: “The debates we have had respond to the bigger question about what kind of university model we want. The challenge is to strengthen what has been achieved with greater coordination and quality. We must act with responsibility, order, and institutional vision.”
Dr. Mónica Marquina discussed trends in higher education governance during her keynote address: “The challenge is how to combine academic tradition with institutional management, legitimate evaluation, planning, and recognition of diverse university work in Latin America.” Student representatives such as Ignacio Diez emphasized that these encounters are crucial for self-governance: “These meetings are key in a self-governing university because they reinforce our need to listen so that we can move forward as a community.”
Throughout two days of group discussions organized into nine working tables—covering topics like faculty policy planning, professional development, research roles, internationalization challenges, social responsibility—the participants developed proposals aimed at improving conditions for professors. Dra. Augusta Valle said: “It has been a very important space for all of us; listening together about what happens in other areas allows us to exchange ideas on teachers’ needs. Now it’s time for us all to implement these proposals so they contribute toward PUCP’s strategic objectives.”
