The Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) Piura announced on Apr. 18 that it inspected 33,873 homes in several districts as part of its ongoing campaign to control the spread of dengue. The inspections were carried out in areas served by the I-2 Lágrimas de Curumuy, I-3 Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre, I-4 Los Algarrobos, I-3 San José, and I-4 Pachitea health establishments.

This effort is part of the “2026 Dengue Prevention and Control Plan” developed by the Ministry of Health. More than 40 inspectors were deployed across different neighborhoods in Piura district for this initiative.

During these activities, authorities found evidence of Aedes aegypti mosquito eggs, larvae or pupae in 1,464 homes. In addition, they reported that 3,952 homes were closed at the time of inspection and inspectors were not allowed entry into another 196 residences.

Diresa Piura staff are urging residents to allow identified health inspectors into their homes for larval control measures. Inspectors treat water storage containers with pyriproxyfen larvicide—a product approved as safe by the World Health Organization—to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

Inspectors also work with social actors and community health agents to identify people with fever symptoms and use a self-assessment form called “10 minutes against dengue” to educate families about recognizing and eliminating potential mosquito breeding grounds. This form can be downloaded for free at https://www.gob.pe/es/i/7628162.

To prevent mosquito bites further, authorities recommend using repellent on exposed skin areas; wearing long-sleeved clothing during peak mosquito activity times (early morning and dusk); installing screens or nets on doors and windows; and cooperating with vector control personnel during home visits for larval checks or fumigation.
