The Ministry of Production’s National Program A Comer Pescado reported on Apr. 23 that more than 21 tons of hydrobiological products and over 10,000 cans of fish preserves were promoted in Peru’s highland regions between April 13 and April 19. These efforts benefited families across 27 districts in the Andean areas.

This initiative is significant as it brings nutritious food to remote areas where access to hydrobiological products is often limited, supporting improved nutrition for communities with pressing dietary needs. The program aims to consolidate its presence throughout the Andes, promoting social inclusion and better living conditions for fishermen and producers across Peru through harmonious development initiatives, according to the official website.

Among the highlighted regions was Junín, which saw over ten tons of hydrobiological products promoted during “Mi Pescadería” fairs held in several districts including San Ramón and San Luis de Shuaro, as well as key locations such as Chanchamayo, Perené, Pichanaki, Sangani, Río Negro and Satipo. Apurímac also recorded notable results by distributing more than five tons during events on April 16 and 17 in Andahuaylas province (Kisuará and Huancarama), Sotapa center-populated area, Abancay province (Tamburco, Las Américas and Villa Ampay).

The “Mi Pescadería” fairs not only provide affordable access to these foods but also encourage informed consumption through cooking demonstrations, tastings and nutritional guidance activities. These actions aim to strengthen healthy eating habits among the population. The Ministry of Production serves producers, entrepreneurs and communities throughout Peru according to the official website.

The Ministry acts as the governing body responsible for crafting national policies in fishing, aquaculture, micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as well as industry sectors with a focus on sustainable development according to its official website. It issues regulations intended to strengthen sustainability within these industries.

According to its official website, the Ministerio de la Producción del Perú oversees national policies for fishing, aquaculture and industry while providing technical assistance and training services designed to improve productivity for producers nationwide. The organization has received international recognition from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for its sustainable fishing practices.
