Peruvian coffee exports totaled $131.3 million during January and February, marking a 71.9% increase compared to the previous year, according to a May 4 announcement from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation.

This growth is significant for rural economies in Peru, as coffee production supports more than 223,000 smallholder families across 16 regions. The ministry said this expansion continues the momentum from a record-breaking year in 2025, when exports reached $1.796 billion.

The ministry attributes the strong performance to both the high quality of Peruvian coffee varieties and favorable international prices resulting from reduced supply by other major producers such as Brazil and Vietnam due to climate change impacts. Peruvian coffee now reaches 52 global markets, with the United States as its largest buyer, followed by Germany, Belgium, Canada, and Colombia.

Coffee remains Peru’s main traditional agricultural export product and sustains nearly two million people throughout its value chain. Key producing regions include San Martín, Cajamarca, Junín, Cusco, Amazonas, Huánuco, and Pasco.

Despite these successes, challenges remain regarding producer organization. The ministry noted that while about 85% of growers operate on plots between one and five hectares in size—and only around 30% are organized into cooperatives—efforts continue to close this gap by improving access to technology and strengthening negotiation capacity for smallholders on global markets.

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation promotes cultural and social well-being through rural inclusion initiatives according to its official website. The ministry operates through central headquarters in Jesús María as well as decentralized offices across Peru according to its official website. It functions within Peru’s Executive Branch according to its official website.

The agency advances strategies for sustainable agricultural development alongside food security efforts according to its official website, serving agricultural producers nationwide according to its official website while supporting legislative initiatives that strengthen rural development according to its official website.
