The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) announced on March 29 that it will allocate a total of 14,765 tons of island guano during 2026. The fertilizer will be extracted, processed, and sold at a social price to benefit 13,731 family farming households across 23 regions in the country.
This initiative aims to help small-scale farmers access an organic fertilizer valued for its nutrient content and ability to improve soil fertility. It is expected to increase yields for crops such as coffee, potato, maize, cacao, quinoa, barley, wheat, fruit trees and pastures.
A budget of S/20 million has been set aside for the program. The ministry said the distribution is intended to support sustainable agricultural practices by reducing reliance on chemical inputs and enhancing productive stability among farmers.
The fertilization effort is projected to cover more than 27 thousand hectares of crops. Officials expect this will stimulate the local economies of beneficiary families in several regions.
According to MIDAGRI’s Annual Extraction Plan for 2026 through AGRO RURAL, activities will take place on Macabí Island (La Libertad), Santa Island (Áncash), Punta San Juan (Ica), and at the Chimbote port terminal (Áncash).
Island guano is recognized as a natural fertilizer rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium—nutrients essential for improving soil conditions and boosting agricultural productivity. AGRO RURAL remains the only entity authorized nationwide for extracting, processing, distributing and selling island guano through its zonal units and storage centers.
