The Ministry of Economy and Finance of Peru signed a $200 million loan agreement with the World Bank on March 21 to support projects aimed at expanding potable water and sanitation services in the river Lurín and Lake Titicaca basins.

This funding is intended to address long-standing needs for improved water infrastructure, which are seen as essential for both public health and environmental preservation. The program will be executed by the Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation using a circular economy approach.

During the signing ceremony, Minister of Economy and Finance Rodolfo Acuña Namihas said, “El Estado está haciendo el esfuerzo para poner en ejecución proyectos que debieron realizarse hace varios años, pero que se necesitaba decisión política para llevar a cabo, para poner en marcha, en beneficio de los ciudadanos.”

The first phase of the program will focus on improving quality of life for residents while helping preserve strategic ecosystems such as Lake Titicaca. In Puno region, the initiative will benefit people living in Puno, Ilave, Ayaviri, Moho, and Juli. In Lima, new wastewater treatment plants are planned for the districts of Lurín and Pachacámac.

Acuña said that this financing will enable high-impact works across the country. “Las obras de esta envergadura son fundamentales para cerrar brechas y mejorar servicios básicos. Contar con el respaldo de organismos internacionales nos permite avanzar en proyectos estratégicos para el desarrollo del país,” he said.

The initial stage includes construction under Project Convenio 25 in Puno; preparation of technical documents for two wastewater treatment plants in Lurín and Pachacámac; and pre-investment studies for five new plants in Ayaviri, Moho, Puno, Ilave, and Juli.

Acuña concluded that the government will continue working with international organizations to finance priority projects: “El Gobierno continuará promoviendo…el financiamiento de obras prioritarias con apoyo de organismos internacionales…para seguir impulsando proyectos que contribuyan al desarrollo sostenible del país y al bienestar de la población.”
