The Ministry of Health of Peru announced on March 26 the creation of a temporary Multisectoral Working Group tasked with evaluating the supply and distribution of pharmaceutical products and medical devices in the country, with a focus on those used for cancer treatment.
The initiative aims to improve timely access to essential treatments for cancer patients. The group was established through Ministerial Resolution No. 280-2026/MINSA, which was published in the official newspaper El Peruano.
According to the ministry, representatives from several key institutions will participate in this working group. These include the Ministry of Health, Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS), Social Health Insurance (EsSalud), National Center for Strategic Supply of Health Resources (Cenares), General Directorate of Medicines, Supplies and Drugs (Digemid), as well as health branches from the Armed Forces and National Police.
The main function of this technical team is to develop recommendations for actions that could improve how medicines and medical devices are supplied within health services, especially those needed for oncology care. The group will also prepare a final report addressed to the head of the Ministry of Health outlining their analysis results and proposals aimed at strengthening product availability within Peru’s healthcare system.
Cenares will serve as Technical Secretariat for this working group, providing both technical and administrative support during its operation. The working group is set to operate for 90 calendar days after it is established and will carry out its activities without incurring additional expenses for public funds.
This measure seeks to reinforce coordination among major healthcare institutions so that timely and equitable access to medications and health technologies can be ensured—particularly benefiting patients with cancer.
