The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) announced on April 27 that mining investments in Peru surpassed $871 million during January and February, marking a 35.7% increase compared to the same period last year. The ministry said this growth was mainly driven by infrastructure, mining equipment, and exploration activities.
This development is significant as it highlights increased activity in the sector, which can have broader economic implications for regions where mining plays a key role. Arequipa, Ica, Moquegua, and Apurímac accounted for more than half of the total national investment during this period.
According to MINEM’s Statistical Mining Bulletin published by its Directorate General for Mining Promotion and Sustainability, infrastructure investment reached $150 million in February alone—a rise of 33.1% from January and up 140.5% from February last year. Investment in mining equipment totaled $91 million for the month, representing an increase of 115% over February last year. Exploration saw investments climb to $52 million—32.7% higher than a year ago—while development and preparation activities received $72 million (a yearly increase of 68.1%).
Investments related to beneficiation plants amounted to $71 million in February—a gain of 18.4% compared with the same month last year—and other categories saw spending reach $39 million (up by 26.4%).
