The Ministry of Economy and Finance announced on March 16 that Peru’s economy has achieved 22 consecutive months of positive growth, with a gross domestic product (GDP) increase of 3.5 percent in January, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics.
This sustained period of expansion is seen as an indicator of the country’s strong macroeconomic fundamentals and a favorable start to economic activity in 2026.
Minister of Economy and Finance Gerardo López Gonzales said, “The Peruvian economy has maintained a positive pace, overcoming the decline of 0.28 percent observed in March 2024. The growth in January reaffirms the strength of Peru’s macroeconomic fundamentals and projects a favorable start to the national economy this year.”
According to López, early indicators for February suggest that economic growth continued its positive trend into the first months of the year. He stated, “Leading indicators show favorable results. For example, electricity demand increased by 2.7 percent in February, marking twelve consecutive months of growth.” López also noted that investment-related indicators remained strong: “Imports of capital goods grew by 24.6 percent in February 2026, accumulating twenty-three consecutive months of expansion, reflecting greater acquisition of machinery, equipment, and materials to expand productive capacity.”
Primary sectors grew by 2.6 percent in January after contracting in December 2025. This was mainly due to improved performance in agriculture—up by four percent—and mining and hydrocarbons—which rose by 3.1 percent after two months of decline.
Non-primary sectors also expanded by 3.5 percent for their own twenty-two month streak, driven largely by construction which saw its highest rate in over four years at fifteen point six percent growth.
López concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to consolidating economic growth: “The Government is committed to consolidating economic growth, fiscal sustainability and promoting clear and predictable rules that strengthen competitiveness and contribute to the well-being of Peruvian families.”
