The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru announced on March 27 its participation in the Fourteenth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization, which is being held in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The event brings together senior officials from more than 160 member countries.
César Llona, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, is representing Minister José Reyes at the conference. Llona has begun a work agenda that includes bilateral meetings, ministerial sessions, and dialogue spaces aimed at strengthening the WTO as a guarantor of predictable and open trade that can contribute to sustainable development.
Llona is taking part in debates on topics such as organizational reform, electronic commerce, agriculture, development issues, and fisheries subsidies. He is also attending meetings focused on key aspects of the multilateral trading system and its principles. These discussions address actions to reinforce predictability, legitimacy, and credibility within a rules-based multilateral trading system.
As part of his agenda at the conference, Llona has held bilateral meetings with representatives from India, Cambodia, and the United Arab Emirates. Further talks are planned with officials from Australia, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Morocco to strengthen trade relations and explore new cooperation opportunities. The vice minister is also participating in coordination sessions related to agricultural issues as well as meetings concerning the Agreement on Investment Facilitation for Development.
According to Mincetur’s statement announcing this participation at an important international forum such as this WTO meeting reaffirms Peru’s commitment to strengthening the multilateral trading system by promoting clear and transparent rules while defending more inclusive trade oriented toward development.
The Ministerial Conference serves as the most important body within WTO’s governing structure; it brings together trade ministers from member countries to define guidelines for international trade.
