The Ministry of Health announced on May 15 that it will promote international residency programs in cardiovascular and oncological surgery. Minister of Health Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero said this initiative is part of efforts to strengthen the training of medical specialists and reduce gaps in specialized care across the country.
“To talk about medical residency, we must talk about hospital infrastructure, so that residents have modern and well-equipped hospitals for their training; for this reason, we are inaugurating new facilities. Likewise, we will promote the training of more medical specialists through international residencies in priority areas such as cardiovascular and oncological surgery, which are among the leading causes of death in the country,” Velasco Guerrero said.
The announcement was made during an Extraordinary General Assembly of the National Council for Medical Residency (Conareme), attended by representatives from 23 universities within the National System for Medical Residency (Sinareme), regional health directorates and management teams, Social Security (EsSalud), military and police health services, as well as the Institute of Legal Medicine.
During the session, participants evaluated proposals aimed at strengthening the National Admission Competition for Medical Residency 2026. They also discussed updates to technical instruments related to accreditation processes for teaching sites and authorization procedures for clinical fields.
Velasco Guerrero reported that Peru is currently working under two investment models to improve hospital infrastructure: Works for Taxes (OxI) and Public-Private Partnerships (APP). “We have Huarmey Hospital through OxI with Antamina at S/227 million. Under APP we have Villa El Salvador Emergency Hospital and San Borja National Children’s Health Institute,” he said.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continue collaborating with universities and institutions within Sinareme to advance a modern, decentralized approach to medical education aligned with national health needs.
