The Ministry of Health announced on April 20 a basic guide to support mothers in achieving pain-free breastfeeding with a proper latch. The guidance highlights the importance of correct technique during the first hour after birth, referencing national health standards to ensure both mother and baby benefit from breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding is described as essential for babies’ development, helping strengthen their immune systems, supporting growth, and fostering emotional bonds. However, many mothers face questions about techniques, use of breast pumps, and best practices during this period.
The guide emphasizes that a good latch is crucial for effective feeding and to prevent discomfort or injury. It recommends that babies open their mouths wide enough to take in not just the nipple but also part of the areola. Coordination between mother and baby is key for successful feeding.
Eleana Médina, responsible for maternal lactation at the Ministry of Health, said: “This ancient practice should not be painful. The belief that pain is normal or part of the process is a myth.” She added that if mothers experience discomfort while nursing, they should review their technique and seek professional help if problems persist.
The guidance also addresses the use of breast pumps in specific situations such as storing milk or maintaining supply. It advises mothers to consult healthcare professionals before using these devices to ensure proper usage. Additionally, it states there is no need to clean a baby’s mouth after each feeding under normal conditions because breast milk does not leave harmful residues.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting healthy practices based on evidence and providing reliable information to dispel myths around breastfeeding.
