The Ministry of Health of Peru announced on May 6 that women, especially adolescents and young adults, should be aware of warning signs for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and seek timely medical evaluation at the nearest health facility.

The ministry said key symptoms include missed menstrual periods for several months, persistent acne, unexplained fatigue, weight gain, and the appearance of hair in uncommon areas. These signs should not be considered normal and require specialized medical assessment.

According to the announcement, PCOS affects more than just the ovaries. It involves hormonal and metabolic imbalances that can impact a woman’s overall health. The ministry noted that up to 70 percent of women with this syndrome worldwide have not been diagnosed, which increases the risk of complications.

The Ministry recommends consulting a gynecologist or endocrinologist for proper diagnosis. If left undetected, PCOS can lead to conditions such as diabetes, fertility problems, and other metabolic disorders.

In addition, the ministry said adopting healthy habits like balanced nutrition and regular physical activity can help prevent or manage this condition. For further information or free guidance, individuals are encouraged to contact Line 113.
