The Ministry of Health of Peru announced on Apr. 24 that it is prioritizing efforts to increase vaccination coverage and address gaps during the Vaccination Week in the Americas 2026. The announcement follows a strategic meeting led by Dr. Pedro Javier Navarrete Mejía, chief of staff representing the Minister of Health, with directors and representatives from Lima’s four Integrated Health Network Directorates.
The ministry said these coordinated actions are aimed at improving immunization rates in Metropolitan Lima and reducing disparities among vulnerable populations. The meeting included participants from regional, provincial, and district health councils as well as officials from the Immunizations Directorate and other senior health authorities.
According to the ministry, a clear roadmap was established during this session to boost vaccination rates, enhance communication strategies, and encourage social participation—factors considered essential for a successful campaign. Edward Dennis Mandaré Durán, executive director of SECCOR (Secretariat for Coordination of the National Health Council), said that sustained coordination between different levels of government, health system actors, and citizen involvement is key to ensuring an effective public health response.
Commitments were also made to deploy intersectoral interventions that improve vaccine access in hard-to-reach areas and strengthen operational capacity against preventable diseases. The ministry reaffirmed its position that these multisectoral spaces are vital for optimizing resources and strengthening healthcare management during Vaccination Week in the Americas.
The initiative is presented as part of ongoing public policy efforts intended to protect lives and safeguard public well-being through increased immunization.
