The Ministry of Health in Peru approved a new Manual for Counseling in Sexual and Reproductive Health, according to an April 12 announcement. The manual aims to improve the quality of care and guidance that people receive at health services across the country.
This update is intended to ensure that all individuals have access to timely information about available contraceptive methods, including their benefits, risks, and possible side effects. The ministry said the guidelines emphasize respect for rights related to sexual and reproductive health.
The manual also reaffirms each person’s right to freely choose their preferred contraceptive method after receiving appropriate information. It incorporates a focus on equality between women and men, promoting non-discriminatory care based on respect, dignity, and personal autonomy.
According to the Ministry of Health, this technical standard is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare workers’ abilities so they can provide counseling that is more empathetic and tailored to users’ needs. The update responds to changing population needs for better access to guidance on family planning, sexual health, disease prevention, and overall well-being.
Access to information about sexual and reproductive health is described as a fundamental right by the ministry. Officials say proper counseling enables people to make informed decisions about their health.
