The Ministry of Health of Peru announced on April 27 that it is advancing the acquisition process for factor IX, a key medication used in the treatment of patients with hemophilia B across health facilities nationwide.
According to the ministry, this step aims to ensure timely access to quality treatments for people living with hemophilia B, a rare disease that requires ongoing and specialized care. The announcement follows a meeting between technical teams from various general directorates within the Vice Ministry of Public Health and representatives from the Peruvian Hemophilia Association.
During the meeting, officials explained that the General Directorate of Strategic Interventions in Public Health has sent a purchase request for both human coagulation factor IX (500 IU) and standard half-life recombinant factor IX (500 IU) to the National Center for Supply of Strategic Resources in Health for immediate attention. The ministry said it has also invited EsSalud, Peru’s Social Security health system, to consider participating in a joint or corporate purchase given its own demand for these medications.
“This initiative seeks to guarantee timely access to quality treatments for people living with hemophilia B,” said officials from the Ministry of Health during discussions with stakeholders.
The ministry confirmed it will continue working on actions aimed at improving both availability of treatments and quality of life for patients affected by rare diseases throughout Peru.
