The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) announced on April 25 its commitment to developing a reliable, regular, and sustainable energy system for Peru by promoting efficient use of resources and diversifying the country’s energy matrix.

This announcement comes as MINEM continues to encourage sustainability and private investment in the hydrocarbons sector, aiming to ensure competitive energy supply and progress toward national self-sufficiency. The ministry contributes to social well-being by fostering harmonious relations among sector participants, communities, and the environment, according to the official website.

Minister Waldir Ayasta Mechán met with representatives from Transportadora de Gas del Perú (TGP) to discuss how advancing the natural gas industry can strengthen Peru’s energy security. During this meeting, participants highlighted the need for infrastructure that matches growing demand across residential, transport, industrial, and electricity generation sectors. The ministry noted that natural gas accounts for nearly 70% of national energy production.

Ayasta Mechán said it is important “to guarantee continuity of service” through investments that provide comprehensive infrastructure for a reliable supply. He also called for coordinated efforts: “We must build a work vision that responds to new needs in the country and establish solid foundations to achieve short- and long-term objectives.”

Vice Minister Marco Agama Rodríguez indicated alternatives are being evaluated—such as parallel pipelines or storage facilities—to maintain service continuity during potential disruptions. MINEM reaffirmed its willingness to work jointly with stakeholders in hydrocarbons toward sustainable development and stronger national energy security.

MINEM manages policies for mining and energy sectors with an emphasis on supporting economic growth while protecting the environment. It operates from central headquarters in San Borja as well as regional directorates throughout Peru according to information from its official website. The ministry issues regulations guiding sustainable practices across these sectors while serving communities nationwide through both policy leadership and operational support.
