The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism announced on March 30 the launch of Peru’s Circular Economy Roadmap for the Tourism Sector through 2030, positioning the country as the first in Latin America to introduce such a strategy. The plan is expected to contribute up to S/1,200 million to Peru’s tourism gross domestic product by 2030.
The initiative aims to integrate economic growth, climate action, and sector competitiveness into a single development agenda. Authorities say this approach will help make tourism a key driver for economic recovery and inclusive territorial development.
Minister José Fernando Reyes Llanos said, “We are talking about concrete impacts on our economy and society. According to estimates made, the application of this instrument will allow circular economy in tourism to contribute up to 1,200 million soles to tourism GDP by 2030. Likewise, it is projected that nearly 31 thousand new jobs linked to circular activities within the tourism value chain will be generated.”
Reyes Llanos also addressed environmental goals: “From an environmental point of view, it is estimated that approximately 74 million tons of CO2 equivalent will be mitigated. In addition, more than two million hectares of ecosystems and natural and cultural heritage will be restored and conserved.” He added that this milestone reflects Peru’s commitment “to the 2030 agenda, climate action and building a more competitive, resilient and inclusive tourism model.” He called on all actors—businesses, entrepreneurs, regional governments, academia—to put these plans into practice.
The roadmap promotes adoption of circular business models by encouraging waste reduction, efficient use of water and energy resources, and strengthening sustainable value chains throughout the industry. The document was developed with technical input from public agencies as well as support from international partners including the European Union delegation in Peru and Spain’s AECID cooperation agency.
Officials including EU Ambassador Jonathan Hatwell; Deputy Minister of Tourism Aracelly Laca; Deputy Minister for Environmental Management Romina Caminada; along with representatives from international organizations attended the event.
