The supply of asparagus from Peru is set to decrease as the transition to Mexican-grown product begins. Carlos Solf, vice president of procurement for Southern Specialties, said that Peru has been supplying good volumes of asparagus as the year closed out and noted that there was more volume from Peru compared to last year.
This development matters for importers and retailers who rely on consistent asparagus supplies. The shift in sourcing may affect availability and pricing in the coming weeks.
Solf said, “This should taper off as we transition to Mexican product out of Caborca. We saw an uptick in volume this year, largely due to favorable weather conditions.” He also mentioned that Peru’s season ran as expected and estimated about three weeks remain before the transition is complete. Growing conditions have reportedly been good in Mexico ahead of the switch.
Demand for asparagus remains steady, with activity during the holiday season described as good by Solf. Regarding pricing, he said, “While asparagus prices have been higher than last year we also experienced higher costs than a year ago. Costs continue to create challenges while trying to provide consumers the best value.”
