The Peruvian government announced on March 23 the international purchase of cancer medications, allocating S/378 million to strengthen oncology care across the country. The initiative was revealed by Luis Enrique Arroyo, president of the Council of Ministers, and Dr. Juan Carlos Velasco, Minister of Health.
This measure aims to ensure timely access to treatments for more than 285,000 patients nationwide while reducing the financial burden on families. Officials said this investment will help maintain continuous care and improve patient outcomes.
During the announcement event, Arroyo and Velasco visited the pharmacy area and medication warehouse at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN), where they reviewed supply chain processes including procurement, storage, and distribution of oncology drugs. They also inspected medical services and met with both medical and administrative staff to better understand facility needs and progress in specialized care.
Arroyo said that this funding is part of a strategic decision by the state “to strengthen the health system’s response capacity and protect the lives of thousands of Peruvians.” Velasco added that this policy will have a direct impact on many patients by ensuring timely treatments and lowering out-of-pocket expenses. “No podemos permitir que los pacientes enfrenten barreras para acceder a su tratamiento. El aseguramiento en salud busca precisamente evitar el empobrecimiento de las familias,” he said.
The Ministry of Health reiterated its commitment to continue closing gaps in oncology care access with policies designed to guarantee timely treatment for vulnerable populations.
