The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation of Peru announced on May 5 that Minister Felipe César Meza Millán met with İbrahim Yumaklı, his counterpart from Turkey, during the Fifth International Water Forum in Istanbul. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in agriculture.
The talks addressed ways to improve commercial access for Peruvian products such as coffee, avocado, cacao, and livestock goods into the Turkish market. These items are part of Peru’s main agricultural exports with significant international presence. The ministers also discussed joint actions for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists in 2026, aiming to promote sustainable management of productive ecosystems.
Water management was another central topic. Both sides exchanged experiences to enhance resilience in agricultural systems facing climate change. Efficient water use is considered crucial for maintaining productivity amid increasing climate variability.
Minister Meza Millán said: “Desde el MIDAGRI impulsamos acciones estratégicas para garantizar una gestión eficiente y sostenible del agua en beneficio del desarrollo del país.” He also emphasized that resilience depends not only on infrastructure but also on good governance and evidence-based decisions.
The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation promotes cultural and social well-being through rural inclusion and food security efforts; it utilizes its central headquarters in Jesús María along with decentralized offices across Peru; it functions within Peru’s Executive Branch; it advances strategies for sustainable development; serves agricultural producers nationwide; and supports legislative initiatives by issuing regulations—all according to the official website.
Officials indicated that further collaboration is expected as both countries seek new opportunities for their agricultural sectors.
