The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru and the Ministry of Natural Resources of Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding on March 19 regarding critical minerals and mining sustainability. The agreement aims to establish mechanisms for collaboration, technical knowledge exchange, and the adoption of environmental and social standards to promote modern and competitive mining.
The memorandum was signed by Angelo Alfaro Lombardi, Minister of Energy and Mines, and Jean-Dominique Ieraci, Canadian Ambassador to Peru. The ceremony took place in the Túpac Amaru Hall at the Government Palace with President José María Balcázar Zelada and Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela in attendance.
President Balcázar Zelada said, “The instrument we sign today is important because it establishes strategic visions for strengthening and bilateral cooperation in a key area. In this way, we deepen the magnificent historical relations we have had with Canada.”
Ambassador Ieraci said, “This memorandum establishes a framework to deepen cooperation in key areas: technological innovation, investment promotion, strengthening public sector capacities, environmental and social management, traceability, and training the human talent needed for the mining sector of the future.” He added that collaboration has already produced concrete results by supporting capacity building in mining governance. Canadian academic institutions such as the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia will work with regional partners to offer specialized training starting in May.
According to details from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, participants may cooperate on technological innovation for exchanging mining solutions focused on traceability and decarbonization; promote investments through information sharing; strengthen public sector capacities regarding regulatory matters; encourage responsible environmental and social management; improve community relations; and develop human capital through best practices exchanges and training programs.
