The Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) led a meeting on April 20 to assess the progress of planned interventions for 2026 in the Valle de los ríos Apurímac, Ene y Mantaro (VRAEM). The session brought together technical teams from various ministries as part of ongoing efforts to promote comprehensive and sustainable growth in the region.

The importance of these initiatives lies in addressing longstanding disparities within VRAEM by coordinating investments and activities across different levels of government. These efforts aim to improve quality of life and create new opportunities for local families.

Raúl Hoyos de Vinatea, high commissioner for promoting development in VRAEM, said that this year, “the VRAEM Productivo strategy is driving an investment close to 410 million soles, for the implementation of 219 investment projects and 16 activities carried out jointly among national, regional, and local governments.”

During the meeting, technical teams from several ministries—including Education; Housing, Construction and Sanitation; Health; Energy and Mines; Transport and Communications; Labor and Employment Promotion; Foreign Trade and Tourism; Agrarian Development and Irrigation; Production—as well as representatives from DEVIDA (the National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs), reported on their prioritized initiatives scheduled for completion by 2026.

The agenda was organized into three main themes: access to quality basic services for residents; enabling interventions such as road, energy, and digital connectivity; and promotion of tourism alongside agriculture as engines for lawful economic growth in VRAEM.

According to PCM officials at the event’s conclusion, these actions reaffirm the government’s commitment “to closing historical gaps in the territory” while supporting a gradual shift away from traditional coca leaf cultivation toward broader opportunities throughout VRAEM.
