More than 900 students from the Miguel Grau Educational Institution in Magdalena del Mar began the 2026 school year during a ceremony attended by Aldo Martín Prieto Barrera, Minister of Transport and Communications, district mayor Francis Allison Oyague, and other officials.
The event highlighted the importance of education for national development and reaffirmed the Ministry of Transport and Communications’ commitment to creating safer road environments for the educational community. “Education is the foundation upon which we build Peru’s future. Every student who learns and strives to improve represents an opportunity for our country to keep moving forward,” said Prieto Barrera.
The school, which has been operating for 130 years, is part of the Safe Road Environments initiative. Through this program, the ministry provides technical assistance to local governments to implement measures aimed at reducing traffic risks around prioritized educational institutions. These interventions include installing and improving vertical and horizontal signage, speed reducers, and protective barriers to ensure compliance with a speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour in school zones. At Miguel Grau School specifically, green areas have been added along with a designated drop-off zone to facilitate safe student arrivals.
These efforts are part of Commitment 6 under the Incentive Program for Improving Municipal Management 2026 from the Ministry of Economy and Finance. This mechanism aims to strengthen local government implementation of road safety measures. In collaboration with municipal authorities, Magdalena will carry out improvements at eleven intersections and around six schools in the first half of this year, benefiting over three thousand students and more than two hundred teachers. The ministry’s Directorate of Road Safety will provide ongoing technical support as well as evaluation and validation for these projects.
During the ceremony, Mayor Allison Oyague administered an oath to Alejandra Pancorvo Raico as student mayor. Officials also participated in raising the national flag, singing the national anthem, visiting interactive classrooms, and reviewing new road signage installed outside the school.
As part of preparations for the new academic year, it was also announced that forty interactive classrooms would be implemented to enhance digital teaching tools available to students.
