The Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo, part of the Ministry of Health, announced on March 23 that more than 40 patients from various regions received reconstructive surgeries during a recent medical campaign in partnership with the Asociación Operación Sonrisa Perú.
The campaign took place from March 17 to March 21 and provided free specialized care to children and adolescents with cleft lip and palate. The initiative aimed to improve their health, self-esteem, and quality of life.
A multidisciplinary team including specialists in plastic surgery, pediatrics, anesthesiology, dentistry, nutrition, speech therapy, and psychology provided comprehensive care. This ensured not only medical treatment but also support before, during, and after each procedure.
Dr. Carlos Vladimir Mascaro Canales, head of the Plastic Surgery Service at the hospital said that prenatal checkups are important for early detection of these conditions. “Ante un diagnóstico es fundamental acudir a establecimientos de mayor complejidad que aseguren un tratamiento quirúrgico y multidisciplinario adecuado,” he said.
More than 50 volunteers participated in this joint effort as healthcare professionals or support staff from both national and international backgrounds. Lizet Campos, executive director of Operación Sonrisa Perú said: “Estas jornadas no solo permiten intervenir pacientes sino también capacitar a profesionales con el objetivo de consolidar equipos quirúrgicos especializados que garanticen una atención continua.” The Ministry of Health stated that it remains committed to promoting interventions like these that transform lives and provide new opportunities for well-being.
