The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation announced on May 6 that more than 14,000 small-scale farmers across Peru have received a total of S/ 226,036,670.94 in agricultural loans through the Agroperú Fund.
The funding aims to boost rural economies by providing accessible financing under favorable conditions to strengthen both agriculture and livestock sectors. The ministry said this initiative is intended to help improve the livelihoods and commercial competitiveness of producers nationwide.
According to the ministry, a total of 14,160 credits have been distributed with strong regional participation. Puno leads with 2,359 credits issued, followed by Cajamarca with 2,319 and Amazonas with 1,233. Other regions such as San Martín, Piura, Cusco and Apurímac also reported high demand for credit.
The financing has supported three main areas: In the first quarter of this year alone, there were over 7,500 loans for crop planting and harvesting—mainly rice, avocado (palto), potato and corn; about 5,400 credits were allocated for livestock activities involving cattle, pigs, sheep and camelids; while over a thousand loans went toward coffee and cacao production improvements using sustainable practices.
These resources are managed through Agroperú Fund by Agrobanco. To access these benefits farmers must be members of an agrarian organization; maintain normal or CPP (potential problem client) credit ratings; and provide proof of land ownership or possession.
The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation serves agricultural producers nationwide from its central headquarters in Jesús María as well as decentralized offices throughout Peru. The agency promotes cultural inclusion strategies alongside food security efforts to advance sustainable rural development according to the official website.
