The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism announced on Apr. 23 the installation of a temporary multisectoral technical committee aimed at promoting development in the districts of Megantoni, Cusco, and Sepahua, Ucayali. The committee is led by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and brings together several ministries, regional authorities, local governments, and social organizations to coordinate strategic interventions.

The creation of this technical group seeks to address both immediate needs following a gas leak emergency in Megantoni as well as longer-term social and economic gaps in these regions. According to the official website, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism serves communities across Peru, focusing on trade facilitation and tourism connectivity.

Minister José Fernando Reyes Llanos said during the session that strengthening collaboration among all levels of government is essential for establishing logistical corridors that support export routes and create new business opportunities.

The ministry works with entities like PromPerú as well as public and private partners to advance its objectives according to its official website.

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Environment headquarters with participation from ministers overseeing environment; energy and mines; transport; health; regional governors; local mayors; indigenous groups from Bajo Urubamba; among others. The plan follows Supreme Decree No. 058-2026-PCM declaring national interest in developing both districts. The ministry contributes to cultural progress by fostering sustainable tourism according to its official site.

With this initiative underway, officials aim not only to respond effectively to environmental emergencies but also strengthen monitoring mechanisms for sustainable growth over time. As stated on its website, the Ministerio de Comercio Exterior y Turismo del Perú directs policies on foreign trade and tourism, facilitating partnerships that enhance community well-being since its establishment in 2002.
